The Weavers of Saramyr

I came across this book by accident really. I friend of mine had  read a Slovak version, loved it and passed the copy on to my wife. She subsequently bought an English version for me to read (my Slovak is rubbish).

The Weavers of Saramyr is set in the oriental location of Saramyr. Their society is very ordered and honour to ones family is a key part of life. But this stable kingdom is being ruined by blight. Crops are failing, the land is becoming more dangerous, and most sinister of all, more and more Aberrent children are being born.

Aberrents often have physical deformaties but most dangerously of all they have access to powers that are too dangerous to be allowed to live. The people of Saramyr abhor Aberrents, and the Weavers ensure that this remains the case.

The Weavers have their own strange powers, but they’ve made themselves indispensable to the noble families, who now can’t oust them even if they were inclined to. Which they’re not.

A further catastrophe has now hit Saramyr. The Aberrent rot has now reached high, into the most noble of families. The daughter of the Empress is an Aberrant…

The Weavers are probably the most interesting characters in the book. Although they have reached a place of great power within Saramyr they also have strange powers. Weavers also have a much darker side, after they have performed their magic and return from the Weave they are overcome with strange and truly violant urges. Often involving the mutilation and sexual interference of woman and even children.

The Weavers of Saramyr is a very good book with excellently crafted characters and a plot full of politics, intrigue and at times, unbelievable violence in both actions and thought.

As readers of fantasy will  no doubt be aware cliché all too often plays a part in the stories. However, Wooding avoids this masterfully and keeps tension high. A great start to the series and I’ve now already started on book 2, The Skien of Lament.
