The List

I read a lot, certainly more often than I actually get around to reviewing. So I’ve decided to start posting ‘The List’. This is where I’m going to show you what books I’m reading and planning to review, as well as books that I may have re-read, or even about to read. The hope is that it’ll encourage me to actually get off my lazy arse and write some more reviews.

If not, at least you’ll know what’s been keeping me busy!

The Left Hand of God

Author: Paul Hoffman
Publisher: Penguin

I just picked this book up randomly two days ago and I’ve already got stuck in. And I must say, so far so good. It’s a little dark, cruel and set in some, as yet, un-named world. The protagonist is a young boy called Thomas Cale, and according to the blurb on the back ‘the fate of the world lies in his hands’.

Either way, Conn Iggulden called it ‘Brilliant. Funny, violent and intriguing’. The Daily Telegraph, The Times, SSF World and others also said nice things about it…

In Search of the Dark Ages

Author: Michael Wood
Publisher: BBC Books

Again this is a book that I’ve already started reading. It covers a massive period of history from the Roman occupation of Britain all the way through to the Norman Conquest. All you’re favourite historical characters are there including Queen Boudica, the Sutton Hoo man, Alfred the Great and many more.

I’m a good way through it and it’s a proving to be a decent read that’s also challenged some of the ‘facts’ that I thought I new.

Sourcery

Author: Terry Pratchett
Publisher: Corgi

Ignore the odd spelling of ‘Sourcery’, this is actually what the book is called. I first read this book when I was about 14 or 15, and I’ve just re-read it. This is the fifth book in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. To top it all off it features one of his favourite cowardly characters, one who can’t spell wizard!

About Face 3

Author: Alan Cooper, Robert Reimann, and David Cronin
Publisher: Wiley

I was recommended this book on interaction design by the head of UX at Splendid, an agency that I work with based in London. Apparently it’s the book on interaction design and covers websites, mobile, applications, kiosks and most other digital products that require humans and computers to work together.

Hegarty on Advertising

Author: John Hegarty
Publisher: Thames & Hudson

John Hegarty is one of the well know characters within the advertising business, and a partner at the international advertising agency, Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH). I’ve not started reading it yet so I can’t say too much about it, but as Hegarty is one of the big players in advertising I’m hoping this will be an interesting read with lots of good advice. Here’s to hoping…
