Aleister Crowley ‘the wickedest man in the world’ was known as a poet, magician, mountaineer, polemicist and pornographer. He’s probably most famous for his work in the occult and the debauchery that went with it. However, the question everyone wants to know is, was he real or a fraud?

Now of course that question is inseparably tied in with the reality of magic, and that argument has been going on long enough. However, I think in essence the important question, did Crowley believe he was real? Has been answered, and in that context you would have to say that he was not a fraud.

The book itself has been well researched with plenty of cross-referencing, and the author has obvious credentials in the field. Wilson’s first book on the subject titled “The Occult” published in 1971 was what set him up as a widely accepted writer.

My only criticism of the book is that opens up trying to prove that magic is real. However, no real time is dedicated to the subject so the arguments appear loose, with no substantiating evidence. However, don’t let yourself be put off by this, the rest of the book is of a much higher caliber and is properly researched.

If you are looking for some quick insights into what made Crowley tick then this would be well worth your time.
