The Silmarillion details the history of Middle-earth from the moment it was created leading up to the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This period of time is called the First Age or the Eldar days.

If you’ve read and enjoyed The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings it DOES’NT mean you’ll enjoy this. It is a heavy read and can be a struggle to get into, it took about 3 tries before I actually finished it. However, having said that it does provide you with interesting information and brings depth to the other books. This is one for very serious Tolkien fans only!
