Moem The Beginning — Book 1

  • Author: Linda Whiddon

Moem is book one in the Moem Chronicles, which are set in the future. Mankind now populates many planets and another solar system. Moem, herself, lives in this second solar system on a small planet called Katchwari.

Moem is a Priestess who’s spent most of her life confined in a temple. It is here, under the tutelage of the High Priest and the Shaman Onedja, she learnt herb law and the history of the Ancient Ones who protect the planet. And the planet is in need of protection.

The Dark Lord Mahakala wants to destroy all mankind, and is waging a terrible war. He has already destroyed many of the other planets in the solar system and his attention is now focused on Katchwari.

Only Moem holds the key to the survival of the human race. The key is her, as yet, unborn child. This has placed Moem in a position of grave danger as the Dark Lord will stop at nothing to destroy her and her child…

Allthough Moem is set in the future it’s very much a fantasy book. And it has been combined nicely with a Sci-Fi universe which ads an extra twist and dimension to the novel. However, I did find the start of the book a little disjointed as it lays out some of the history. I probably would have preferred to have these elements brought in gradually alongside the story.

The book it-self is well paced and in the main flows well. You do build up empathy for the characters as well, as they battle through the Dark Lord’s schemes.

It will be interesting to see how Whiddon, a first time novelist, develops the Moem Chronicles, and how she herself develops as a writer.
