Her name is Hekat — And she will be slave to no man

Empress is the first book in what should be a truly fantastic ‘Godspeaker’ series. The main herion (if she can be called so) is a girl named Hekat. She’s born into a misogynistic world where woman are often sold as slaves, and wives who only give birth to woman are often pummeled with stones until death.

Hekat is sold into slavery by her farther, who has sons and therefore no use for a girl who he has to feed. However, Hekat’s life is not to remain a humble one as the dark, blood loving god of Mijak has blessed her.

The god raises her firstly through the ranks of soldiers, gaining distinction on the bloody fields of battle, and eventially to the palace of the ruler of Mijak. For Hekat’s future is one at the expense of others, and on the blood and bones of her enemies.

It’s a story that will see Hekat raised up on high and give birth to sons who will have their own destinies to perform.

This is a fantastic fantasy story, and Miller’s dark world — and even darker hero — make for a truly imaginative tale. This is not light fantasy and the world she’s created is a dark one that probably wont be to everyone’s taste.

In particular people tend to hate Hekat, but I see this as an example of Miller’s excellent writting rather than an issue with the story.

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who’s read the book to say what they thought about Hekat. Particularaly given the context of the world she lives in, so drop me a line below…
