The Riven Kingdom: Godspeaker Book Two
- Author: Karen Miller
- Publisher: Orbit
- Classification: Godspeaker
The Riven Kingdom is the second book in the Godspeaker series. Where the first book (Empress) concentrated on Hekat and her homeland of Mijak, the second is set in Ethrea. (Which is likely to please those who couldn’t get on with Hekat.)
Ethrea is a small kingdom that has been living in peace for hundreds of years. It has no standing army, but it’s protected by the neighbouring kingdoms, all down to a carefully balanced treaty.
It’s security is ensured as it is the centre of all the trading, and is completely independent from other rulers and the church.
The Church does not recognise your right to an opinion! You are female and a minor. You will hold your tongue!
Ethrea has no princeses for the now dying King to pass on the crown. His only surviving heir is Princess Rhian, and there’s never been a ruling Queen.
But god has chosen Rhian to rule — much to the chargrin of Prolate Marlan (the power hungry head of the church) as well as the dukes of Ethria — and now faces civil war.
But Ethria needs stability and a strong leader because the hoards of Mijak are looking to take over the world and subvert everyone to their dark god, Chalava.
Ethrea and The Riven Kingdom are very different to Mijak and of course Empress. Millar’s objective was to give the story room to develop and she surely has, dedicating two entire books to the different kingdoms. Now I’m ready for the third one, where we should see these 2 very different kingdoms collide, in what is likely to be a bloody finale…
