The Forgotten Legion

The Forgotten Legion is the first volume in Ben Kane’s Forgotten Legion Chronicles. It’s the story of 4 people whos lives have been shapped by Rome.

Tarquinius is an Etruscan soothsayer. The Etruscans were wiped out as a nation and only a few survive as slaves to the Romans.

Brennus the Gaul was a warrior for the Allobroges tribe who came from what is now France. They rebelled against Roman rule and were ruthlessly annialated. Seeing his family murdured he was then captured and became one of Rome’s most famous and feared gladiators.

The final two characters are brother and sister, Romulus and Fabiola. They are both slaves and their master is facing financial problems. To help alliviate them and get the money lenders off his back he sells Romulus to one of the gladiator schools and Fabiola into prostitution.

Crassus and Pompey are joint consuls and are locked in a power struggle, made more difficult due to the growing popularity of the young Caesar.

In order to help gain back popular opinion Crassus starts out on an exabition that ends in disaster. And leads to the forming of The Forgotten Legion.

For honour, freedom and revenge

This is an excellent first book in what I’m sure will be a great series. Kane obviously did his research and does a very good job of getting the history across. What I particularly liked is that it’s an interesting view-point he portrays.

These are epic times, but instead of telling it through the eyes of the big guys like Pompay, you see the world of Rome through the eyes of slaves and prostitutes.

The characters are more interesting and have more depth than those in the recently reviewed ‘The Gladiator’ and all over this is a more thoughtful book…
